What to Expect at Your First Psychiatric Evaluation

A guide to help you feel prepared and confident before your first mental health appointment in Virginia.

Booking a psychiatric evaluation can feel like a big step. Whether you've been referred by your primary care doctor or you've decided on your own that it's time to talk to a mental health provider, knowing what to expect can make the process less overwhelming.

Before your appointment

When you book through Headway, you'll complete intake paperwork online before your visit. This includes your medical history, current medications, family mental health history, and a description of what you're experiencing. Taking your time with this — rather than rushing through it in a waiting room — helps your provider understand the full picture before you even meet.

It can help to write down a few notes before your evaluation:

  • What symptoms are you experiencing, and when did they start?
  • How are they affecting your work, sleep, relationships, or daily routine?
  • Have you tried any treatments or medications before?
  • Is there a family history of mental health conditions?
  • What are you hoping to get out of treatment?

During the evaluation

A psychiatric evaluation is a conversation, not a test. Your provider will ask questions about your symptoms, history, and goals. They'll listen. There's no pressure to have everything figured out — part of the evaluation is helping you make sense of what you're feeling.

The evaluation typically covers:

  • Symptom history: What you've been experiencing, how long it's been happening, and how severe it is.
  • Medical background: Past diagnoses, medications, surgeries, and any substance use.
  • Family history: Mental health conditions in your family can inform your treatment plan.
  • Daily functioning: How your symptoms affect work, school, relationships, and self-care.
  • Treatment goals: What you want to improve, and what success looks like for you.

Whether your appointment is via telehealth from anywhere in Virginia or in person at our Waynesboro office, the process is the same. Your provider will create space for you to talk openly, without judgment.

After the evaluation

At the end of your first visit, your provider will discuss their observations and initial recommendations. This might include starting a medication, beginning therapy, or both. You'll leave with a clear plan and a follow-up date.

Psychiatric treatment is collaborative. If something doesn't feel right, or if you have questions between visits, your provider is part of your team. The evaluation is just the beginning of a process built around what works for you.
